Akpabio Declares Himself Highest-Ranking Christian in Government

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has described himself as the highest-ranking Christian in the Nigerian government, attributing his political rise to what he called God’s exceptional grace.

Akpabio made the remark on Saturday during the blessing and inauguration of the Regina Coeli Parish Rectory in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The event, attended by senior clerics and political figures, was captured in a statement issued in Abuja by his media aide, Jackson Udom.

Reflecting on his journey from modest beginnings to becoming Nigeria’s number three citizen, the Senate President said his life story underscored divine favour.

Akpabio, who noted his affiliations with several Christian denominations, added that he felt privileged to be a Catholic. He urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in their faith, stressing that no contribution toward church development is too small.

The Senate President also disclosed plans to commission a new worship centre within the National Assembly complex in the coming weeks, saying the facility would provide lawmakers with a dedicated space for prayer.

During the ceremony, the Catholic Bishop of Uyo, Most Rev. John Ayah, commended Akpabio and his wife for their longstanding support to the church, including hosting Catholic bishops at their national meeting in Ikot Ekpene last year. Ayah urged the Senate President to ignore critics, noting that prominence naturally attracts scrutiny.

Akpabio’s comments come amid ongoing conversations about unity in the Senate. Recently, rumours of attempts to unseat him resurfaced, but Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele dismissed the claims, insisting that the leadership remains stable and focused on its legislative responsibilities. His clarification followed remarks by former Chief Whip Orji Uzor Kalu, who referenced past unsuccessful efforts to remove the Senate President.
