The Shipping Branch of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has raised concern over the increasing casualisation of workers by shipping companies and terminal operators across the country.
The branch president, Olufemi Abass, said the practice involves outsourcing workers to contractors who pay poor wages and engage them on temporary terms, contrary to labour laws.
Abass described the trend as exploitative and dehumanising, alleging that some companies deliberately weaken union presence in the maritime sector to maximise profits.
He noted that the practice has led to the gradual erosion of permanent employment and decent working conditions in the industry.
The union said it would escalate the matter to its national leadership, warning that decisive action would be taken to address the situation and protect workers’ rights.
