Consequence’s involvement in hip hop can be traced back to the mid-1990s, where he collaborated with A Tribe Called Quest prior to his work with Kanye West.
Rapper Consequence has come forward to clarify a moment featured in In Whose Name, the latest documentary about Kanye West, after a scene depicting a tense interaction with Saturday Night Live star Michael Che ignited online speculation. In a video posted on X on September 20, Consequence addressed the clip while driving, emphasizing his desire to share his perspective only once. “Yo, this is Consequence, I’m addressing this one time,” he stated.
He elaborated that the incident occurred following his performance with Kanye West on SNL. At approximately 1:30 a.m., his seven-year-old son was waiting outside the studio. As he went to collect his child, Consequence entered into an ongoing conversation involving West, Che, and Pete Davidson, with documentary director Nico capturing the moment nearby.
Consequence mentioned that it took him a moment to fully understand the situation, as West was positioned directly in front of him, with Che to his left and Davidson to his right. Upon realizing that the discussion was becoming increasingly tense, he sought to de-escalate it.
“Given that we were in a professional environment, I tapped that individual [Che] on the shoulder and suggested that we should postpone this conversation for another time,” he clarified. He then led West away from the altercation.

However, according to Consequence, the documentary edit that viewers were shown left out a significant moment. He asserted that Che returned, clearly upset, which led to a second confrontation. “That is why I do not engage with edits,” he remarked, criticizing the film’s portrayal of the interaction. “When he returned agitated, I told that individual, ‘Listen, either you back off or we can step outside.’ He opted to back off.
Consequence further mentioned that he assembled West and others before completely exiting the building. He indicated that his account could be verified by Kim Kardashian, Che, or Nico, the director.
These remarks illustrate Consequence’s dissatisfaction with selective editing in documentary narratives, especially when they involve prominent figures like West. By sharing his perspective, he positioned himself as the one who mitigated a situation that could have escalated, while emphasizing how crucial behind-the-scenes context is often omitted in the final version.
Neither Kanye West nor any other parties involved have provided comments regarding the scene.
