UK Welcomes Back Elderly Couple Freed from Taliban

An elderly British couple, who were released by the Taliban authorities after nearly eight months in detention in Afghanistan, returned to the UK on Saturday.

Peter Reynolds, aged 80, and his wife Barbie, aged 76, arrived on a flight from Doha, the capital of Qatar, where they had spent the night undergoing medical checks following their release.

The authorities in Qatar played a crucial role in facilitating the couple’s release amid growing concerns regarding their health.

Barbie Reynolds was seen smiling widely as the couple exited the arrivals area at London’s Heathrow airport, although they did not pause to speak with the waiting media.

The family expressed their “immense joy” upon learning of their elderly parents’ release.

“This experience has highlighted the importance of diplomacy, empathy, and international collaboration.

“Although the journey to recovery will be lengthy as our parents work to regain their health and reconnect with their family, today marks a day of great joy and relief,” stated their four children in a joint statement released on Friday.

The couple was detained in February while they were on their way back to their home in Bamiyan province, located in central Afghanistan.

Initially, they were detained in a maximum security facility, followed by confinement in underground cells devoid of natural light, before being handed over to the intelligence services in Kabul, according to UN experts.

The couple wed in Kabul in 1970 and have dedicated nearly twenty years to living in Afghanistan, where they have been involved in educational initiatives for women and children. They also acquired Afghan citizenship.

When the Taliban regained control in 2021, they chose to remain in Afghanistan despite the British embassy’s counsel.

The Taliban have not provided an explanation for the couple’s detention, while negotiations for their release were facilitated by Qatar.

On the tarmac at Kabul airport on Friday prior to their departure, Barbie Reynolds remarked that they had been treated well and expressed their eagerness to reunite with their children.

“We are looking forward to returning to Afghanistan if possible. We are Afghan citizens,” she stated.

Upon their arrival in Doha, they were warmly welcomed by family members, with their daughter Sarah Entwistle expressing to AFPTV her feelings of “overwhelming gratitude and relief.”

In July, independent UN human rights experts urged the Taliban government to release them, cautioning that their health was deteriorating and they faced the risk of “irreparable harm or even death.”

The couple’s family had consistently appealed for their release, highlighting their declining health.

Taliban foreign ministry spokesman Abdul Qahar Balkhi stated on Friday that the couple “had violated the laws of Afghanistan” and were released from custody “following the judicial process.”

Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer remarked that the “long-awaited news will come as a huge relief” to the family.

The British government continues to advise its citizens against traveling to Afghanistan, indicating that its capacity to provide consular assistance is “extremely limited.”

Russia stands as the sole nation to have officially recognized the Taliban government, which has enforced a stringent interpretation of Islamic law and has been accused of extensive human rights abuses.

Dozens of foreign nationals have been arrested since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021 following the NATO pullout.
