What’s in Reagan Ad That Caused US-Canada Trade Talks to Collapse?

A radio advertisement featuring former US President Ronald Reagan has sparked a major diplomatic row, leading President Donald Trump to announce the immediate suspension of trade negotiations with Canada.

The ad, sponsored by the Canadian province of Ontario and released last week, uses excerpts from a 1987 address Reagan gave on foreign trade. In the speech, Reagan warned that tariffs “hurt every American.”

President Trump described the ad as “FAKE,” accusing Canada of misusing Reagan’s legacy. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation also criticized the advert, saying it “misrepresents” the former president’s message.

Although the one-minute advert features Reagan’s actual words, it rearranges the order of his original five-minute address—an edit that critics say changes the context of his remarks.
