Environmental Challenges and Life Expectancy in Niger Delta

A civil society organization, We The People (WTP), has characterized the Niger Delta as the most underdeveloped area in the nation.

The executive director of WTP, Ken Henshaw, revealed this information yesterday during the people’s environmental assembly organized by the group in Port Harcourt.

Henshaw pointed out that numerous oil spills from pipelines owned by multinational oil corporations have resulted in environmental degradation, economic stagnation, and health problems for the local residents.
He remarked, “Among the various negative indicators is the fact that life expectancy in the region is significantly lower than the national average, currently at 41 years. Residents are much more likely to suffer from respiratory diseases and cancers compared to other parts of the country, women face a higher risk of miscarriages and giving birth to deformed babies, and individuals are more prone to consuming toxic hydrocarbons from their water sources and agricultural products.

“These consequences of crude oil and gas extraction, which have persisted for over 70 years, have greatly contributed to the underdevelopment of the Niger Delta.

“Nevertheless, despite the adverse effects on the population and their environment, oil companies such as Shell, Exxon-Mobil, Eni, Total Energies, and Chevron have rarely been held accountable for the destruction they have caused in the region.

“Instead of addressing the consequences of their extraction activities, these companies have engaged in smear campaigns against the very people they have harmed. Through persistent disinformation, oil companies have shifted the blame onto the victims who endure the repercussions of their ecocide, accusing them of being responsible for the same damage.”
