Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has said Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II will remain the Emir of Kano, dismissing speculations that recent political realignments could affect his position.
The governor’s clarification follows renewed debate over the long-running Kano emirate crisis, especially after his alignment with the federal government, which raised questions about the future of Sanusi’s reinstatement.
For nearly two years, Kano has witnessed a royal standoff, with Sanusi operating from the Gidan Rumfa palace, while Aminu Ado Bayero has remained at the Nassarawa mini-palace, both laying claim to the throne.
Sanusi, who was deposed in 2020, was reinstated in May 2024 after the Kano State House of Assembly repealed the law that created additional emirates in the state. Despite this, Bayero has continued to assert his claim, prolonging the crisis.
Governor Yusuf, however, maintained that Sanusi’s status as Emir remains unchanged, insisting that political developments would not alter the existing emirate structure.
