Task force targets ‘one-chance’ gangs ahead of yuletide
Men of Operation Sweep, a special security task force of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), on Monday combed motor parks and other strategic locations across the FCT to flush out criminal elements.
The Director of the Security Services Department, FCTA, Mr Adamu Gwary, disclosed this while briefing journalists after the operation, saying the exercise was aimed at ensuring a safe and secure yuletide season.
Gwary, who was represented by the Secretary of the Command and Control Centre, Dr Peter Olumuji, said the ongoing operation would further strengthen security across the territory during the festive period.
He explained that the FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike, had issued marching orders to security agencies operating under Operation Sweep to rid the territory of all forms of criminality.
According to him, the operation has recorded significant success and is being sustained through continuous monitoring of motor parks and other vulnerable locations.
The director added that illegal motor parks being used by “one-chance” criminal gangs to abduct unsuspecting members of the public were being dismantled.
“Any location found to be harbouring criminal elements, including shanties, is being destroyed,” he said.
He warned miscreants to desist from criminal activities, noting that the FCT no longer offers a safe haven for criminals.
Gwary further disclosed that several arrests had been made, with many shanties dismantled and criminal elements operating as taxi drivers dislodged.
He also urged operators of motor parks and event centres to ensure that individuals without proper identification, especially motorists, are not allowed to operate within their facilities.
Commending the task force, the Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Jabi Motor Park, Abuja, Mr Adamu Abubakar, praised the operation for helping to rid the city of “one-chance” robbers.
