The Kogi State Government has denounced the violent demonstration that took place on Wednesday at the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, organized by individuals representing the Association of People Living with Disabilities (PWDs).
The demonstrators, who barricaded the university’s main entrance and interrupted academic activities, asserted that they were being excluded from employment opportunities at the institution.
However, in a statement released in Lokoja on Thursday, the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, characterized these assertions as “unfounded,” emphasizing that the university has hired numerous qualified individuals with disabilities for both academic and non-academic positions.
He provided examples such as Rofiat Ozohu Ohize, who has been working as Technologist II in the Chemistry Department since May 20, 2024; Ahmed Rufai Omuya, who began his role as an Assistant Executive Officer in the Registry Department on January 11, 2024; and Mustapha Obaje, who became an Assistant Lecturer in the Technology Education Department on March 25, 2025, among others.
“These appointments clearly illustrate that CUSTECH is committed to employing qualified individuals with disabilities, based solely on their skills and qualifications,” Fanwo stated.
He clarified that hiring for academic and administrative roles at the university, as well as throughout all educational institutions in the state, is strictly based on merit. He noted that job openings are publicly advertised, PWDs are afforded equal chances to apply, and those who fulfill the necessary criteria are hired.
“The application process does not reflect disability status; it focuses solely on qualifications and competence. This clearly indicates that the institution practices non-discrimination in every aspect,” he concluded.
While recognizing the difficulties encountered by persons with disabilities (PWDs), the Commissioner asserted that their allegations of exclusion were baseless. He emphasized that the government cannot implement a quota system in academic hiring where excellence and merit must take precedence.
Fanwo further observed that the aggressive nature of the protest, the use of costly recording devices by the demonstrators, and the extensive media coverage indicated evident political motivations.
“As the lead-up to 2027 escalates, it is not unexpected that some politicians might seek to manipulate vulnerable groups to instigate crises and undermine institutions,” he remarked.
The government praised the management and students of CUSTECH for their composure and restraint amidst provocation, highlighting that their choice not to retaliate averted what could have turned into chaos.
Fanwo reiterated Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s dedication to fairness, inclusivity, and service to all citizens, irrespective of their physical condition.
He called on the Police and other security forces to investigate the incident and implement proactive strategies to avert a recurrence.
“While the government is devoted to inclusivity, we will not permit politically driven disruptions to jeopardize the tranquility of our educational institutions,” he stated.
