Police Explain Why Sowore Was Taken to Prison After Being Granted Bail

The Nigeria Police Force has clarified why political activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore was transferred to Kuje Correctional Centre despite being granted bail by a magistrate court in Abuja.

According to the Police, the decision was in line with a valid remand order issued by the court, which directed that Sowore be held in a correctional facility until his bail conditions are fully met. The Force spokesperson stated that the activist’s transfer did not violate the court’s ruling, emphasizing that bail only becomes effective once all stipulated terms and sureties are verified and approved.

Sowore was arrested on October 23, 2025, for allegedly leading an unauthorized protest in Abuja in solidarity with detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu. The Police say the protest contravened existing security directives restricting public demonstrations in the capital.

Authorities dismissed reports claiming Sowore was secretly re-arrested or facing fresh charges, insisting that the move was purely procedural and consistent with the law. The statement added that no individual, regardless of status, is exempt from standard legal procedures once under judicial custody.

Meanwhile, Sowore’s legal representatives have described the action as an infringement on his rights, arguing that the transfer undermines the spirit of the bail granted by the court. Human rights groups have also called for his immediate release pending the completion of bail verification.

The development has once again stirred public debate on human rights, rule of law, and the treatment of political activists in Nigeria’s justice system.
