As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections, internal divisions within opposition parties are raising concerns that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) could gain an early advantage.
The APC has already unveiled its election timetable, with its national convention scheduled for March 25–28, 2026, a move party insiders say is aimed at strengthening unity and preparing candidates early.
In contrast, major opposition parties are still battling internal crises, legal disputes and leadership struggles, slowing down preparations for the polls.
In the Labour Party, although the Independent National Electoral Commission recognised Senator Nenadi Usman as acting national chairman, the leadership crisis remains unresolved, with loyalists of former chairman Julius Abure still contesting the decision.
