At least 16 vigilante members have been killed by armed bandits, while 42 residents were abducted in a series of coordinated attacks across communities in Mashegu Local Government Area, Niger State, Daily Trust reports.
According to local sources, the attacks occurred in multiple villages, where bandits stormed in groups, overwhelming local self-defense forces. The large number of abductions has fueled fears in affected communities and underscores the growing boldness of these criminal groups.
Security analysts argue that the scale of these attacks reflects a major escalation in the bandit conflict. Some call for more decisive state and federal action, emphasizing that peace deals are unlikely to succeed without genuine disarmament of armed gangs.
Community leaders and civil society groups are demanding that victims be properly compensated, warning that without justice and protection, the cycle of violence and kidnapping will continue unabated.
