The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has assured Nigerians that the Nigerian Army (NA) will intensify efforts to tackle emerging security threats while strengthening counterinsurgency operations across the country.
Shaibu gave the assurance on Sunday at Dabban Lema Camp in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State during a yuletide luncheon organised for troops deployed to frontline operations.
Officials said the camp was formerly occupied by bandits before it was successfully cleared and secured by Nigerian troops.
Speaking at the event, the COAS, who was represented by the Commander, Signals Corps, Major General Muhammed Abdullah, said the army remained focused on consolidating gains recorded across various operational theatres while upholding the honour, professionalism and integrity of the service.
He commended the troops for their resilience, bravery and sacrifices in the defence of the nation, assuring them of continued support from the army high command.
In his remarks, Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, said the luncheon highlighted the importance the Nigerian state attached to the welfare and wellbeing of troops engaged in frontline operations to safeguard national peace and stability.
The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Kayode Alabi, noted that success in the fight against terrorists, kidnappers and other criminal elements depended largely on unity, collaboration and effective coordination among security agencies.
Also speaking, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General C. R. Nnebeife, expressed appreciation to the COAS for the morale-boosting initiative, describing it as a timely encouragement for troops risking their lives in defence of the country
