The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has debunked reports claiming that it has released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections, describing the information as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Saturday, INEC’s Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the Chairman, Mr. Adedayo Oketola, said the commission had not released any official timetable for the forthcoming polls.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission wishes to categorically refute reports circulating in some quarters claiming that the Commission has released the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election,” the statement said.
INEC emphasized that it operates strictly within the provisions of the law and would not issue any timetable outside the statutory framework. The commission noted that all its activities are guided by the Electoral Act.
It cited Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which provides that a Notice of Election shall be published not later than 360 days before the date appointed for a general election.
“Any timetable or schedule issued outside this statutory framework cannot emanate from INEC,” the commission stated.
INEC assured Nigerians that the official timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections would be released in due course, in full compliance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act. It added that such information would be made public only through its official and verified channels.
The commission urged the public and the media to disregard the fake reports in circulation and rely solely on INEC’s official platforms for accurate and authoritative information.
