Kwara Monarch, Oba Kamilu Salami, Freed After 25 Days in Captivity Following Ransom Payment

The Ojibara of Bayagan Ile, Oba Kamilu Salami, a traditional ruler in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, has regained his freedom after being held captive by armed bandits for 25 days. He was released on Tuesday evening after his family and members of the community paid a ransom to his abductors.

Oba Salami was abducted on his farm on November 29, 2025, when suspected bandits seized him and took him into the forest. His release sparked joy and relief among residents, who gathered at his palace in Bayagan Ile to welcome him back safely.

A community spokesperson, Ayinla Lawal, confirmed that the ransom was paid in two instalments and that the funds were raised entirely by community members without assistance from the Kwara State Government or security agencies. Lawal declined to disclose the exact amount paid, but described it as substantial and said delays in raising the money contributed to the lengthy detention.

After his release, Oba Salami was taken to Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, for medical attention. His younger brother, Aliyu, who helped deliver the ransom, explained that negotiating with the kidnappers was challenging as they frequently changed locations, making the process risky.

The monarch’s abduction and protracted detention have highlighted ongoing concerns about worsening insecurity in parts of Kwara State, where communities frequently face threats from armed criminal gangs.
