The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has labeled US President Donald Trump as “Islamophobic” and “racist”.
Khan made this statement during an interview on Sky News on Wednesday, following Trump’s insinuation that the British politician aimed to implement sharia law in the capital of the UK.
According to ETIMES, Khan, who is affiliated with the centre-left Labour Party, and Republican Trump have exchanged insults for several years, with the most recent dispute arising from remarks made by the president at the United Nations this week.
“I believe President Trump has demonstrated that he is racist, sexist, misogynistic, and Islamophobic,” the Mayor stated.
During his address to the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, Trump remarked, “I look at London, where you have a terrible mayor, a terrible, terrible mayor, and it has undergone significant changes.
“Now they wish to adopt sharia law. However, you are in a different country, and that is not permissible.
Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer has made significant efforts to maintain a favorable relationship with Trump, including an unprecedented second state visit to the UK last week.
Khan asserted that London ranks highly in various indicators such as foreign investment, expressing his pride in the city being the greatest in the world.
ETIMES notes that Islamophobia refers to the irrational fear, hostility, or hatred directed towards the religion of Islam or Muslims in general.
