The government of Russia has declared that it is closely following recent developments in Nigeria in light of remarks by Donald J. Trump indicating possible U.S. military intervention in the West African nation.
Speaking on behalf of Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated during a press briefing that Moscow urges all involved parties to abide by international law. She emphasized that Russia is “closely monitoring this issue” and called for “strict compliance” with legal norms.
The comments respond to Trump’s November 1 statement (via social media) that he had instructed the U.S. Pentagon to prepare options for possible military measures in Nigeria, citing what he described as widespread violence against Christian communities.
