A fresh surge of Russian assaults on Ukraine has once more disrupted the nation’s energy systems as winter nears, resulting in multiple casualties and injuries.
Kyiv, Ukraine (AFP) – One person was killed and 17 others wounded, including children, after overnight Russian strikes that also caused widespread power outages across parts of Ukraine.
DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy company, said several power plants were damaged in different regions but did not provide specific details.
In the Lviv region, which borders Poland, the regional governor confirmed that two energy facilities were hit.
Russia continues its attacks threatening the lives and wellbeing of Ukrainians as winter draws near,” Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said.
In Zaporizhzhia, one person was killed and 17 injured, including six children, while authorities reported several buildings destroyed.
Four others were wounded in the Vinnytsia region, where Russian drones were heard flying over the area.
Ukraine’s energy ministry said thousands of consumers were left without electricity, while Russia claimed it had shot down 170 Ukrainian drones across several regions, including Bryansk and Moscow.
Since launching its invasion in 2022, Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, while Kyiv has responded with strikes on Russian oil refineries and other energy facilities.
Reports say U.S. President Donald Trump is pushing for a peace agreement between the two countries, though little progress has been made so far.
