The Federal Government has issued a clarification on subject selection in the revised Senior Secondary School Curriculum as registration for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) continues nationwide.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Sa’id Suwaiba Ahmad, affirmed that no subject has been restricted or excluded under the new curriculum.
According to the ministers, all approved subjects remain open for students, provided their choices are guided by school authorities, parents, or certified counsellors.
They explained that the curriculum is designed to be flexible and student-centred, allowing science students to take subjects from the arts and social sciences, and vice-versa. This approach, they said, supports diverse interests and career pathways.
The Ministry also clarified that the subject previously known as Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has been renamed Digital Technology. The change, they noted, is purely in name and does not affect the curriculum content. Students who previously studied ICT are fully eligible to register for Digital Technology in upcoming examinations.
Addressing concerns over trade subjects, the Ministry said six trade subjects have been approved under the curriculum. Students may register for any of these as long as their schools offer them and they have been taught the subject. However, students who have not taken any trade subject are not required to register for one.
The government urged parents, school operators, counsellors, and examination bodies to rely on verified information and ensure proper guidance for students. It also reassured the public of its commitment to smooth and well-coordinated registration processes nationwide.
