On Thursday, over 500 senior police officers from across the federation appeared before the Police Service Commission (PSC) to undergo promotion interviews as a precursor to their consideration for advancement to the next ranks.
Included in this group were 56 Chief Superintendents of Police, who have been recommended for promotion to the rank of Assistant Commissioners of Police, while 451 Superintendents were suggested for consideration for promotion to the rank of Chief Superintendents of Police.
The candidates participated in a written examination, overseen by Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, the honorable commissioner representing the Judiciary, and Taiwo Lekanu, the honorable commissioner representing the Police and chairman of the standing committee on police affairs.
Ikechukwu Ani, the spokesperson for the commission, stated that the commission has resolved to make promotion examinations a necessary requirement for advancement within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). This decision aims to ensure that police officers are adequately prepared to tackle the challenges of 21st Century policing, in accordance with global best practices.
He also mentioned that this is to guarantee that merit, competence, and character are considered in the promotion process.
Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) are scheduled to appear before the commission on Friday, the 19th of 2025, for their respective round of the promotion examination.
In discussing the promotional exams, the chairman of the commission, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), stated that the PSC has persistently advocated for a dynamic new Police Force for a new Nigeria, which the current government is ambitiously developing.
DIG Argungu (rtd) further emphasized that the commission will not cease its efforts until this goal is realized and expressed confidence that the commission is on the correct path to achieving it.
He urged Nigerians to continue their support for the Nigeria Police Force as a means of encouraging them to recommit to the service of the nation.
