FG to Engage Retired Military Officers in Community Policing

The Federal Government has concluded plans to engage retired military officers in community policing as part of efforts to reclaim ungoverned spaces across the country and enhance local security.

The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar Badaru, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja during a press briefing to flag off activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day and Celebration.

He said the initiative, tagged “Reclaiming the Ungoverned Space for Economic Benefits Programme (RUSEB-P),” is designed to leverage the expertise and discipline of military veterans to strengthen security and promote development in previously insurgent-occupied areas.

He explained that a dedicated committee is finalising the implementation framework, adding that the project aims to create long-term engagement for veterans who possess valuable operational experience.

The minister also unveiled a new digital initiative called “Thank A Soldier” — a QR-code system that allows Nigerians at home and abroad to send messages of appreciation to serving troops and tributes to fallen heroes.

Badaru disclosed that under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the Armed Forces have neutralised over 13,000 terrorists and criminals, arrested more than 17,000 suspects, rescued nearly 10,000 hostages, and destroyed about 1,900 illegal refining sites.

He added that over 100,000 Boko Haram and ISWAP combatants and their families have surrendered, leading to the dismantling of major terrorist enclaves and the restoration of peace in many communities.

To further support veterans, Badaru said the ministry is establishing a Veterans’ Databank and Call Centre to improve welfare delivery and communication.

He also announced plans to review the Nigerian Legion Act, proposing its renaming to the Veterans Federation of Nigeria (VFN) to strengthen the legal framework for veterans’ benefits and reintegration programmes.
