CSOs Urge Tinubu to Grant Nigerians Direct Access to African Rights Court

Groups say move will strengthen justice system and human rights protection

A coalition of 24 Nigerian and international civil society organisations has called on the Federal Government to allow Nigerians direct access to the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

In a joint statement addressed to President Bola Tinubu and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the organisations urged Nigeria to deposit the declaration under Article 34(6) of the Court’s protocol.

The groups said failure to make the declaration limits access to justice for victims of human rights violations, especially where domestic remedies are delayed or ineffective.

They added that granting direct access would strengthen protection of fundamental rights, improve accountability and reinforce Nigeria’s leadership role in advancing human rights across Africa.
