The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has condemned violence against women and child marriage, stressing that culture cannot be used to justify abuse.
Speaking during an interview with Channels Television, Sanusi said every Nigerian woman is entitled to protection under the law, regardless of cultural beliefs.
He explained that many cases of abuse are linked to poverty, unequal power relations and lack of access to education and social services, rather than culture.
The Emir also urged government to improve access to schools and basic services, especially in rural areas, to reduce practices such as child marriage.
