Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has revealed that he has activated a strategic plan aimed at securing the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPoB), Nnamdi Kanu.
The governor made this known in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma. Otti said the strategy was first initiated during Kanu’s trial and would be pursued until the activist regains his freedom.
“While Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is free to appeal his conviction, I’m happy to inform you that I have activated and will continue to work on the already agreed strategy until his freedom is secured,” the statement read.
Otti said he had communicated details of the agreement reached with “the highest authorities” during his recent visit to Kanu at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja.
He criticised the government’s early handling of the IPoB agitation, describing it as tactless and responsible for escalating tensions in the region. The governor called for calm, assuring that political and diplomatic channels would be used to resolve the matter permanently.
“The poor management of the IPoB issue at the incubation stage created the problem we have today; hence, we cannot allow it to linger and create a bigger monstrous situation for us,” Otti said.
He also cautioned politicians against exploiting Kanu’s situation for political gain, urging them to support genuine efforts toward his release.
“I am ready to work with well-meaning Nigerians who truly desire a peaceful resolution. The Federal Government may not have created this problem, but it has the capacity to resolve it courageously and compassionately,” he added.
Otti recalled that he strongly condemned the 2017 military invasion of Kanu’s family home in Abia, emphasizing that dialogue remains the best approach to addressing the IPoB issue.
