Faisal Salisu DambattaA man whose wife and six children were brutally murdered earlier this year, Haruna Bashir, has remarried during the Kano State Government’s mass wedding programme for 1,500 couples.
Bashir’s wedding was held on Friday at the central Juma’at Mosque of the Emir’s Palace in Kano. He is now married to Nabila Kabiru Yunusa with a dowry of N200,000 paid for the marriage.
Governor Abba Yusuf served as guardian (Wali) for the grooms while the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, represented the brides.
Bashir lost his wife, Fatima Abubakar, and their six children on January 17, 2026, when assailants attacked their residence at Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters in Kano, killing the entire family.
Speaking at the wedding ceremony, the Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, said the state government had provided additional support to Bashir to help him rebuild his life after the tragedy.
According to him, the government sponsored Bashir to perform Umrah, facilitated his participation in the Hajj pilgrimage and allocated him a house at Amana City as part of efforts to ease his emotional and psychological burden.
The mass wedding, organised by the Kano State Government, was simultaneously conducted across the state’s 44 Local Government Areas as part of efforts to support widows and other eligible beneficiaries.
Under the initiative, each bride received N200,000 as dowry, alongside additional financial support to establish a small-scale business.
Daurawa urged the newly married couples to uphold the sanctity of marriage, live peacefully and build stable families that would contribute to societal development.
Also speaking, the Chief Imam of Kano State, Prof. Sani Zahraddeen, who presided over the solemnisation of the marriages, advised the couples to treat one another with kindness, love and justice in accordance with Islamic teachings.
He reminded husbands, particularly those with more than one wife, to be fair in their dealings, stressing that justice remained a fundamental requirement in marriage.
One of the beneficiaries, Musbahu Abdullahi, commended the Kano State Government for organising the programme and pledged to care for his wife with love and responsibility.
Special prayers were offered for peace, stability and unity in Kano State and Nigeria.
The state government had earmarked about N1.5billion for the latest phase of the mass wedding programme, which is the second embarked on by the present administration.
