NNPP Confident of Retaining Kano in 2027 Despite Defections — Chairman

1 minutes read

The National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Ajuji Ahmed, has expressed confidence that the NNPP will retain Kano State and secure at least three northern states in the 2027 general elections despite recent defections.

Ahmed made the declaration amid the exit of several party members, including two House of Representatives members, Abdulmumin Jibrin and Sagir Koki, who defected to the All Progressives Congress. The lawmakers, in letters read by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen on Thursday, attributed their move to an irreconcilable crisis within the NNPP in Kano State.

Earlier, in May 2025, two other NNPP lawmakers from Kano State — Kabiru Usman (Rano/Bunkure/Kibiya) and Abdullahi Sani (Karaye/Rogo) — had also joined the APC. The party has experienced further losses in Kano and Jigawa since then.

Despite these setbacks, Ahmed said the defections would not affect the NNPP’s prospects in 2027. According to him, the party has continued to attract new members, particularly from Kano.

“I have just two words for them: ‘good luck,’’’ he said. “Their exit isn’t a minus. A lot more people are flooding into the party. I can assure you that despite their defection, the NNPP will retain Kano comfortably.”

The chairman added that the party is also targeting victories in Jigawa, Kaduna, and additional northern states, whether contesting alone or in a coalition.

Ahmed further claimed that the NNPP won the Taraba governorship election in 2023 but was “robbed,” insisting that the party’s performance then is a signal of broader success in 2027.
