Northern Coalition Accuses Wike of Intimidation, Vows to Defend Bala Mohammed

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, of intimidation and abuse of office, vowing to defend the Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed.

The accusation was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the coalition’s National Coordinator, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi. The group alleged that Wike has repeatedly overstepped the boundaries of his office by interfering in matters beyond his constitutional mandate.

According to Charanchi, the minister’s actions pose a threat to democratic governance and political accountability in the country.

“Wike’s tenure has been marked by a troubling pattern of behavior, including unwarranted encroachments into areas beyond his jurisdiction,” the statement read. “As a minister, he is expected to respect the principles of federalism and the autonomy of state governments, but his actions suggest otherwise.”

The coalition further accused the FCT minister of interfering in political party affairs and using intimidation against perceived opponents, describing such actions as dangerous to democratic tolerance.

CNG also alleged that Wike manipulated the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against Governor Mohammed, describing the development as a misuse of power that raises concerns about the independence of the anti-graft agency.

“The EFCC’s response to Governor Mohammed’s remarks appears scripted in defence of Wike’s political manoeuvrings,” the coalition said, adding that the timing of investigations involving the Bauchi State governor raises serious questions.

The group warned that no politician has a monopoly on political influence, noting that abuse of power often attracts consequences.

It called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene, urging him to rein in the FCT minister to protect the integrity of his administration and uphold democratic principles.

The coalition also urged the EFCC to focus strictly on its statutory mandate of combating economic and financial crimes without political interference.

CNG further called on Nigerians, civil society organisations and political stakeholders to remain vigilant and resist intimidation, stressing the need to defend democracy, electoral integrity and the rule of law.
