The Russian government has backed calls for a reform of the United Nations Security Council to conform with the happenings in the current world.
President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed the Kremlin’s position in reaction to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ comments on changes at the council.
“We have consistently supported the idea of reforming the UN Security Council and adjusting the council to the reality of fast-changing times,” Peskov told TASS.
Guterres wants the reform to include limiting the veto power of members, especially in cases of human rights violations, as proposed by France and the United Kingdom.
President Putin recently affirmed that Moscow and Beijing were in support of the UNSC adjustment to enable the inclusion of Asian, African, and Latin American countries.
The council will meet on Thursday to debate and vote on a ceasefire in Gaza, as well as increased humanitarian access following Israel’s military action since October 2023.
The 10 non-permanent members commenced talks on the draft resolution last month following the United Nations’ official declaration of famine in Gaza.
Guterres called the famine “a man-made disaster, a moral indictment, and a failure of humanity itself,” and criticized those with the duty to act for “failing.”
This week, an investigative commission constituted by the UN submitted its report, accusing Israel of committing “genocide” with the intent to “destroy” the Palestinians.
