President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will leave Abuja today, Sunday, October 12, for Rome, Italy, to attend the Aqaba Process Heads of State and Government Meeting, a high-level summit focused on tackling security challenges in West Africa.
According to a statement from Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the meeting begins on October 14 and will bring together leaders, intelligence chiefs, and military officials from across Africa, alongside representatives of international organisations.
The Aqaba Process, launched in 2015 by King Abdullah II of Jordan and co-chaired by Jordan and Italy, aims to strengthen cooperation in counter-terrorism and address growing threats such as terrorism, cross-border crimes, and piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.
Discussions will focus on improving regional security collaboration, combating online radicalisation, and disrupting terrorist propaganda and recruitment networks.
President Tinubu is also expected to hold bilateral talks with other world leaders to discuss ways to reduce insecurity and strengthen partnerships in the region.
He will be accompanied by key officials, including the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu–Ojukwu; Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; and Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed.
