Paul Onuachu has added his name to an exclusive list of Nigerian footballers to finish as top scorer in a major European league after sharing the Turkish Super Lig Golden Boot with Eldor Shomurodov.
The Nigeria international enjoyed a prolific campaign for Trabzonspor, scoring 22 league goals to finish level with Shomurodov, who plays for Istanbul Başakşehir.
By claiming the award, Onuachu also made club history as the sixth Trabzonspor player to win the individual scoring accolade, further cementing his impact since arriving in Turkey.
The achievement adds another milestone to the 2.01-meter striker’s career, having previously won the Golden Boot in the Belgian Pro League during the 2020–21 season with KRC Genk.
Onuachu now joins a select group of Nigerian players who have ended a season as leading scorers in Europe’s top divisions.
The most recent Nigerian to achieve the feat before Onuachu was Victor Osimhen, who finished as top scorer in Serie A in the 2022–23 season after helping Napoli win their first league title in more than three decades.
Other Nigerians to have won Golden Boot honors in major European leagues include Joseph Akpala, who topped the scoring charts in Belgium in 2007–08, and Tosin Dosunmu, who achieved the same feat in the 2005–06 Belgian season.
