Tottenham Hotspur triumphed over Leeds United with a score of 2-1 in the Premier League on Saturday, thanks to a goal and an assist from Mohammed Kudus, which marked the home team’s first league defeat at Elland Road in over a year.
Kudus set up the opening goal for Mathys Tel, marking his fourth assist of the Premier League season, before the 55 million-pound ($74.13 million) signing netted his first goal for the club during a rain-soaked second half.
Leeds’s unbeaten home streak came to an end at 23 league matches as Spurs climbed provisionally to second place with 14 points, just one point behind Liverpool, who are set to face Chelsea later on Saturday. Leeds currently sits in 12th place with eight points as they head into the international break.
“I’ve definitely been waiting (for my first Spurs goal). As an attacker, it boosts your confidence when you score,” Kudus shared with TNT Sports.
“We now go to represent our country and come back with the same focus. This is a big step in the right direction.”
END-TO-END FIRST HALF
In a thrilling first half, both teams exchanged blows in a physical encounter, but it was Leeds who began with more energy, pressing high and creating opportunities.
Joe Rodon struck the post, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin squandered a prime chance from close range before Spurs finally broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute.
Kudus released Tel down the right flank, and the 20-year-old Frenchman’s shot deflected past Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow.
“I worked a lot on my finishing this week. I’m very happy for myself,” Tel remarked after scoring his first goal of the season.
Leeds responded with increased vigor and were rewarded with an equalizer just 11 minutes later.
Brenden Aaronson’s shot was saved by Guglielmo Vicario, but the Italian keeper could only deflect it to Noah Okafor, who scored from close range.
