Sule Lamido Declares Interest in PDP National Chairmanship Race

Former Jigawa State governor and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sule Lamido, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of National Chairman of the party.

Lamido’s entry into the race comes ahead of the PDP national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State, where new national officers are expected to emerge.

Party sources say Lamido’s declaration has stirred fresh interest within the party’s northern bloc, particularly after earlier efforts to adopt a consensus candidate reportedly failed to gain full support.

The PDP had previously zoned the position of National Chairman to the North, and further micro-zoned it to the North-West region — where Lamido hails from. Other contenders reportedly in the race include former Kaduna State governor Ahmed Makarfi and former minister Tanimu Turaki (SAN).

Lamido, known for his strong voice within the PDP and long-standing political experience, has vowed to reposition the party for unity, credibility, and victory ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Analysts believe his entry could reshape the dynamics of the forthcoming convention as the party seeks to rebuild its strength after recent electoral setbacks.
