The Nigerian wrestling team has departed Abuja for Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, ahead of the 6th Islamic Solidarity Games, as the nation hopes for a strong performance.
President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, PhD, expressed his full support for the delegation, which includes four athletes—Mercy Genesis, Damola Ojo, Christianah Ogunsanya, and Esther Kolawole—alongside coach Purity Akuh and the Federation’s Secretary-General, Oluwasegun Ademisoro.
Before their departure from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, Adeniyi encouraged the team, emphasizing that their progress would be closely monitored and urging them to display skill and determination during the competition.
“Believe in yourselves, give your best effort, and maintain high discipline to make the President and Nigerians proud,” he said.
The NWF President also highlighted that such competitions test Nigeria’s talent and progress on the global stage, particularly at the World Championships and the Olympic Games.
“We urge you to give your best and ensure that Nigeria’s flag is raised victoriously in Riyadh,” he added, noting that the athletes are ambassadors of the nation at the event.
