The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has distanced herself from a viral social media post that allegedly criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over Nigeria’s security challenges.
In a statement released through her verified X (formerly Twitter) account, the former Minister of Finance described the message as fake, misleading, and politically motivated, urging the public to disregard it.
> “I have recently been made aware of yet another fake post circulating on social media purporting to quote me as criticising President Tinubu. This is completely false,” Okonjo-Iweala stated.
She noted that the fabricated message was part of a broader pattern of misinformation and impersonation using her name to fuel political controversy.
Okonjo-Iweala called on Nigerians to verify information before sharing, stressing the importance of responsible communication in the digital age.
The WTO chief reaffirmed her focus on her international duties, particularly on promoting trade-led growth and supporting the economic advancement of developing nations, including Nigeria.
